Why learn consultation skills

General practice can feel relentless.

  • Running late every day

  • Too many issues in one consult

  • Emotional load that stays with you

  • Trying to do the right thing — but feeling stretched

Left unchecked, this leads to:

  • burnout

  • frustration

  • and a quiet loss of joy in the work

This isn’t because you’re not a good doctor.
It’s because the system — and our training — hasn’t equipped us for the reality of general practice.

Learning to consult efficiently can give you your energy back to do the things you love.

About me

My name is Anne Stephenson, a GP of 30 years

I know what it’s like to run late every day,
to feel pulled in multiple directions,
and to go home with nothing left in the tank.

understand the tension between:

  • patient care

  • time pressure

  • financial sustainability

  • and team wellbeing

Alongside my clinical work, I’ve undertaken extensive training in communication skills in healthcare and in facilitating small-group learning.

This allows me to work effectively with groups of doctors — creating safe, practical learning environments where real change can happen.

I’ve seen how small shifts in consultation approach can transform not just one doctor’s day —
but the flow, culture, and performance of an entire practice.

Testimonials  from consultation skills workshops

What stood out to me was the focus on practical frameworks and the opportunity to practice them in a supportive small group setting.

I've already tried some of the strategies, and it's been really helpful in structuring conversations and building rapport with patients.

The format worked really well – the mix of theory, discussion, and practice helped reinforce my learning.-

It's a great opportunity to learn from experienced facilitators and connect with other GPs who share similar interests and challenges.

When you consult with clarity:

You feel more in control of your consultations.

You run closer to time.

You respond to patients — without being overwhelmed by them.

Your thinking becomes clearer and more efficient

Your patients feel heard and understood.

And at the end of the day —you still have something left in the tank.

I’m a GP of 30 years.I know what it’s like to feel overwhelmed in the consulting room —running late, juggling complexity, and trying to do everything well.

Through extensive training in communication in healthcare, and years of facilitating small-group learning,

I’ve developed practical ways of consulting that are both patient-centred and efficient.

This work is grounded in real general practice —and designed to support you in the consults you have every day.
